Shown above are members of Island Castaways, participants in the recent Remembrance Ride. Pictured from left are Greg Blahnik, Jeromy Smith, Jayne Szukalowski, Marv Szukalowski, Teigan Dagnais, Brad Dagnais, Kennedy Dagnais, Jody Prophet, Sydney Madalinski, Chistine Madalinski, Roger Seguin, and Kerry Madalinski. As employees of Island Resort & Casino, the group made its annual Remembrance Ride on bicycles, from the casino in Harris to Escanaba. The ride, which was to have concluded at Ludington Park, ended at Delta Plaza this year, due to rain. Every year on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, all casino employees interested in paying homage to the 9/11 victims join in the Remembrance Ride. Each displays an American flag. “Our numbers were smaller this year, due to illness and weather, but we originally had about 25 folks here (from the casino) sign up to do the ride,” said group member Marvin Szukalowski, surveillance manager at Island Resort & Casino. “We were not going to let the rainy weather dampen our spirits... We did get wet, but we felt fulfilled and true, riding with full-size flags representing the red, white and blue. We will continue to pledge our allegiance to the flag.”
