The city of Escanaba has a great idea to mark the end of summer.
Residents missed out on Fourth of July fireworks in Escanaba earlier this month because of consistent rain. The display just couldn't be set off in those conditions, and had to be postponed. The city, however, is considering a worthwhile alternative - having the fireworks display on Labor Day weekend.
The city is pondering the idea and would like to get feedback from residents. We believe having the fireworks display during the holiday weekend would do nothing but benefit the community.
The date the city of Escanaba is looking at is Sept. 4, the Saturday before Labor Day, with Sunday, Aug. 5, as a rain date. The city is considering hosting a day of family fun, topped off with the fireworks display at dusk. Plans include food vendors and other activities during the event.
This is a perfect time for the event and fireworks. The Labor Day weekend is traditionally the last celebration of the summer months. The planned activities would be a great accent to the occasion for many families.
Labor Day weekend is also the time when the U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Show is held at the U.P. State Fairgrounds. It is also the date for the annual Labor Day parade and celebration in Rock. With all this activity during the holiday weekend, the Delta County might become a destination for those outside the area looking for some end of summer fun.
The city should be encouraged to pursue this worthwhile idea. Residents can voice their opinions on Facebook or the city's website at www.escanaba.org.
