Quake felt in U.P.?

Earthquake hits parts of Canada

TORONTO (AP) - Tremors from an earthquake in Ontario-Quebec, Canada were felt in Escanaba Wednesday.

Mareen Schunk, a secretary with Catholic Charities, located in the Ludington Centre, said while she didn't feel the tremor, individuals with offices toward the front of the building, facing Ludington Street, did.

"My section of the office is toward the center of the building so I didn't feel anything. But those in the front office reported their chairs were moving."

Daily Press Staff Writer Jenny Lancour, along with her daughter, were in the Ludington Centre at the time the earthquake struck Ontario.

Lancour said the tremor was similar to a gentle light rocking sensation. "It was a weird sensation," she said.

While the tremor only lasted approximately a minute, Lancour said she could see the vertical blinds in the office moving.

"The first thing I said was, 'is the building moving?' And my daughter didn't know what was going on until I said something," said Lancour. "It's neat to say that I have experienced an earthquake. Not many people can say that."

Residents of Harbor Tower did not report feeling any tremors Wednesday when contacted by the Daily Press.

Delta County Emergency Service Coordinator Bob Berbohm said he had not received any reports concerning Wednesday's quake.

"The information I have is the tremor was felt in Marquette and Chippewa counties, but there have been no reports from Delta County," said Berbohm.

He said the quake was felt at Chippewa County's 911 Center near the prison in Kincheloe.

"I was sitting at my computer when it happened, and I didn't feel anything," added Berbohm.

A magnitude-5.0 earthquake struck at the Ontario-Quebec border region of Canada Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, and homes and businesses were shaken from Canada's capital in Ottawa on south to an arc of U.S. states.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
