Meyer - Zar

ESCANABA - Victor and Joan Zar recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Victor M. Zar married the former Joan R. Meyer on May 7,1960, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Escanaba.

Standing for the groom were: Clarence (Billy) Weiks of Rapid River, best man and friend of the groom; John and Zar of Rapid River, brother of the groom; and Richard Butkovich of Livonia, Mich., brother-in-law of the groom. Attending the bride were: Kathleen Craig of Escanaba, maid of honor and friend of the bride; Stephanie Butkovich of Livonia, Mich., sister of the groom; and Carol Meyer of Escanaba, cousin of the bride.

Victor worked as a truck driver for U.P. Concrete Pipe Co. in Wells until his retirement in May 1997. Joan was employed at Manning Shoe Store in Escanaba.

Victor stays active keeping the grass cut at home, at their camp in Stonington, and at the cemetery where his parents reside. He has a garden every summer and goes to camp every fall for hunting season. He is also president of the Teamsters Local 328 Retirees organization.

Joan is an active Reading Buddy, working with second-graders at Rapid River School. She is also a member of R.S.V.P. and is active in TOPS, Relic Riders Snowmobile Club, Teamsters Retirees and in her church. She also still works two days a week as a cashier.

The Zars have lived in the Rapid River area since February 1962, when they moved into the new home they had just built. They are members of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Rapid River.

Victor and Joan are the parents of four children - Victoria Goodsell of Owatonna, Minn., Jeffrey (Maureen LaPlant) Zar and Mary Zar, both of Rapid River, and Patricia (Daniel) Chaperon of Wetmore. The couple also has 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, with one more great-grandchild due in June.

On May 8, Victor and Joan were the honored guests at a 50th anniversary celebration hosted by their four children and their families. More than 200 famil members, relatives and friends came from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan for the celebration.
