Boosting tourism is everyone’s job

The days are getting warmer, the grass greener, and the days longer. Summer is fast approaching. In places like Delta County, the summer months bring tourists and visitors to the area.

It's also time for residents to put their best foot forward and become good ambassadors for the area. How many times have you been on vacation and been treated rudely? It's something that sticks with you for a long, long time. Memories of people going the extra mile to help you also last for a long, long time.

Everyone in Delta County can help the tourism industry by being kind and helpful to visitors. Going that extra mile to help someone will leave a lasting impression and make these visitors want to return, and maybe even encourage their friends to visit the U.P.

Why should you care? Even if you have no connection to the U.P. tourism industry, chances are it makes a significant impact on your life. The money generated by the tourism trade is a huge economic stimulus for the U.P. The tourism industry provides jobs. The people employed in those jobs spend money on groceries, services, personal items and all the other necessities of life. Chances are some of the money they spend may end up at your place of employment, helping to provide you with a paycheck.

Asking people in the U.P. to be kind to visitors is sort of like preaching to the choir. Yoopers are known for their friendliness and willingness to help others. It is one of the characteristics that make living in the U.P. worthwhile.

Making a conscious effort to go the extra mile for visitors, however, is a good policy to live by. It is not only the right thing to do, it will help everyone in the U.P. in the end.

People who work in service-related businesses should be especially be aware of this. They are the people who are most likely to have contact with tourists. The service they provide may be the difference between a return visitor and one who will never return - and urges others not to visit here.

Making the U.P. a welcome place for tourists is everyone's business because we will all benefit.
