Recently, the Delta County Board of Commissioners designated April as Head Start Month. The Head Start program deserves the recognition.
Of all the programs which serve young children and their families, Head Start is one of the best with benefits from the program lasting a lifetime. Head Start does just what its title states - it gives children a head start in life. The beauty of Head Start is it is a family affair. The child's entire family gets involved through conferences, programs and even special fun events for everyone.
Learning is promoted for both child and parent. For example, Head Start provides GED and literacy tutoring as well as many other other services. These are designed to help families with self-sufficiency efforts.
The end result is children who are touched by the Head Start program are less likely to become delinquent, drop out of school or turn to criminal activity.
Community Action Agency Early Childhood/Head Start program is going to be celebrating the accomplishments of the local Head Start Program this week. The agency certainly has much to celebrate. Currently, the local program provides services to 384 children and their families.
Head Start first came on the scene in 1965 and is federally funded. In the decades that have followed, the program has touched countless lives in many, many ways. In today's troubled times, Head Start is probably needed more than ever. Lets hope that funding is able to be continued for this worthwhile and beneficial program that gives children the head start so many need.
