It's good to see so much interest expressed in providing air service to the Delta County area.
Last week, the Delta County Airport Advisory Committee held a special meeting to go over proposals to provide essential air service to the area. The committee had four airlines to choose from - Great Lakes Aviation, Charter Air Transport, Sovereign Air and current air service provider Delta/Northwest. All the airlines submitted proposals to the Department of Transportation outlining what types of services they would provide for the local airport if selected.
In the end, the committee recommended sticking with the current air service provider, Delta/Northwest. The recommendation goes before the Delta County Board of Commissioners Tuesday at its regular meeting.
The Airport Advisory Committee seems pleased with the service Delta/Northwest has provided and the proposals the airline has submitted to continue service here.
It is refreshing to see that four airlines were interested in providing air service here. You may recall that things were not always this upbeat at the local airport. Back in 2008, Skyway Airlines (Midwest Connect) announced it was pulling out of the Delta County market. Before Delta/Northwest took over, there was a period of time when the local airport had no air service.
Two years later, things seemed to have improved, and judging by the response for proposals to provide air service here, it doesn't seem a lapse in service is likely to happen again.
Air service is one of those essential things an area tends to take for granted until it is gone. It's good to see this aspect of the Delta County Airport seems to have bright and stable future.
