ESCANABA - Harriet M. Simpson, 83, of E5035 M-35, Escanaba, passed away Saturday, March 13, 2010, at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.

She was born Oct. 14, 1926, in Grand Rapids, Mich., and was the daughter of Guy and Hattie (Seger) Simpson. Harriet moved with her family to Escanaba in the 1930's and they established Simpson's Cottages in Ford River on Lake Michigan. Harriet was very helpful in the day to day operations of the colleges. The cottages were sold in 1980.

Harriet was a member of the Central United Methodist Church and the R.C. Hathaway Order of the Eastern Star. She loved to visit and especially enjoyed the antics of children. She could also conquer a jigsaw puzzle in the time it takes most of us to find the first few interlocking pieces, and was skilled at Find-A-Word games as well. Harriet took a great deal of pleasure in watching the small wildlife that would venture into the yard to eat the seed she ensured was always there for them. On more then one occasion, a bird would sit on her outstretched finger and wait while she filled the feeders.

Harriet was a very routine-oriented and independent in that regard. "Thanks, but no thanks. I can do it." She knew what she needed to do, and how and when it needed to be done. Harriet's memory was her strongest attribute. She could take us back through her lifetime of memories and regale us with dates, people, and events we never knew or had forgotten entirely.

Harriet M. Simpson is survived by: sister, Velma Shiner of Escanaba; nephews, William (Dolores) Shiner of Escanaba and Allen D. Simpson of Wyoming, Mich.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Homer Simpson.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Eastern Star memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel. Memorial funeral services celebrating the life of Harriet M. Simpson will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Harmon officiating. Burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery.

The Anderson Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements and online condolences can be sent to them at www.andersonfuneralhomes.net.
