BARK RIVER - Louis W. Krause, 88, 4523 K Road, Bark River, quietly passed away Friday evening, Feb. 19, 2010, at his home.
He was born on Aug. 21, 1921, the second son of Fred and Emma (Porath) Krause. Louis left school during the eighth grade and went to work fulltime in the woods with his dad. He was always willing to lend a hand whenever and wherever needed.
Louis was deferred from military service because of a heart problem but was still a hard worker. Louis and his wife, Grace, made pallets for the Andex Company for many years and during their daily trips to Escanaba they would stop at Burger King for lunch as long as he was able to drive.
He was a self-taught man, trucker, farmer, woods worker and carpenter. He built homes, remodeled homes, and was a plumber and electrician.
On Dec. 8, 1941, Louis William Krause married his teenage sweetheart, Grace Esther Heider at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hyde.
During their many years of married life, Louis and Grace provided a home for many relatives and friends. Some stayed days, some weeks, some months and some for many years. The door was always open.
Louis was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hyde where he was baptized, confirmed, married and will be buried from.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Grace; two sons, Thomas (Kerri) of Bark River and Douglas (Tina Silsby) of Escanaba; three daughters, Alyce (Robert) Jacobson of St. Clair Shores, Mich., Sharon (Lionel) Herioux of BarkRiver and Linda (David) Robinson of Bark River; 15 grandchildren, Robert (Michae) Jacobson of Clinton Township, Mich., Barbara (Scott) Graves of Chesterfield, Mich., Scott (Jeffyn) Herioux of Gladstone, Jodi (Greg) Johnson of Negaunee, Becky (Dan) Salmon of Marquette, Michelle (Seth) Oliver of Duluth, Minn., Patti (Ross) Kirschner of Chicago, Mary Robinson of Escanaba, Cissie (Steve) Patterson of Oxford, Mich., John (Amity) Robinson of Evansville, Ind., Jill (Tim) Sysko of Tecumseh, Mich., Amy (Scott) Ayotte of Ishpeming, Tom Krause of Marquette, Lisa Krause (fiance, Brandon Gagnon) and Alex Krause of Escanaba; great grandchildren, Aja Jacobson, Zachary and Carter Graves, Dean, Sydney and Reese Herioux, Katelyn, Breanne and Conner Johnson, Alyssa and Trevor Salmon, Sienna Oliver, Danny and Travis Altmeyer, Steven and Kelly Patterson, Margaret and David Robinson, Mitch, Owen and Elaine Sysko, and Logan Ayotte.
Louis is also survived by his brother, Ralph (Theresa) Krause of Bark River; sister, Marion Trepanier of Rapid River; many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will miss him.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son in 1953, daughter-in-law, Kimberly Krause in 2007; brothers and their wives, Fred (Bertha), Ernest (Jane) and Albert (Violet) Krause; sisters and their husbands, Mildred (Emil) Scheeneman, Martha (Raymond) Sundstrom and Mabel (Fred) Brousseau; brother-in-law, Russell Trepanier; father and mother in law, Alex and Florence Heider; nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, from 4 6 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hyde with services to follow at 6 p.m. with Pastor Ronald Zindler officiating.
Burial will be in the West Ford River Cemetery.
The Crawford Funeral Homes assisted the Krause family with arrangements.
