Currently, some first term lawmakers are trying to make a difference in Lansing by proposing several changes that may help state government become more efficient. One is to force the Legislature to have a balanced budget to the governor by July 1 or have their pay suspended each day it is not done.
Of course, we have stated all along the Legislature is quite remiss in its duty when it comes to the budget deadline and nothing is done - even though they know it is due at the same time as it has been for years.
We would like to think this idea may have merit, but we do not see the long-term leadership on each side of the aisle adopting such a measure, especially since it affects their wallets.
We also like the idea to have the budget in place by July 1. This falls in line with school districts and cities. By having a state budget adopted at the same time, any drastic changes can be dealt with at the beginning of a budget year and not months into it. As we are seeing, this is not a good way to operate for anyone. It also makes no sense.
We wish the legislators luck in trying to get their initiatives adopted. If they can, they have done more good for the state with this one measure than what has been done in years. We shall see.
