ESCANABA - Classes continued throughout much of the day Thursday at the Escanaba Middle School, even as school officials instituted two separate lock-downs of the facility.
The first occurred at approximately 7:55 a.m. when a student was observed hiding what appeared to be a weapon on school property.
Escanaba Public Safety Det. Sgt. Tony LaPlant was notified. An investigation lead to the recovery of a BB gun.
Charges against the student for minor in possession of a BB gun are being sought through the Delta County Prosecutor's Office.
A separate incident Thursday occurred at approximately 12:05 p.m. when a bomb threat was found written on a restroom wall.
The building and students were once again placed into a lock-down for approximately 50 minutes. Escanaba Public Safety conducted a sweep of the building. No explosive devices were found.
Charges of false report of a bomb or other harmful device are being sought against the student who allegedly wrote the message.
Charges if filed will be filed through Delta County Probate Court due to the age of the youths involved.
"These incidents were handled effectively and cooperatively with Escanaba Public Safety," said Escanaba School Superintendent Michele Burley. "These students are also facing disciplinary action which includes the possibility of expulsion."
Burley added the district and administration will not tolerate these interruptions to the learning process of students within the Escanaba School District.
