HANNAHVILLE - Senior Angie Carley has been Big Bay de Noc's serving leader throughout this volleyball season.

She showed why Tuesday night, helping the Black Bears earn a 25-22, 25-23, 25-5 triumph over the Hannahville Soaring Eagles in a Class D district opener.

Carley found her groove in the finale when she hit 19 straight points, enabling the Black Bears to break away from a narrow 4-3 lead.

"That was an awesome run by Angie," said Big Bay coach John Peterson. "For two games, this match was tighter than we would have liked. I don't think we were expecting that. Hannahville came to play."

The victory enables the Black Bears to host Rapid River in a semifinal match Thursday at 7 p.m.

Carley hit several of her nine aces during the match-clinching run, raising her season total to 57.

"I didn't try to do anything fancy," said Carley. "Coach told us not to force anything. We were kind of skeptical coming into the third game, then once we got the lead we started to relax."

Hannahville, hosting a district match for the first time, led 22-20 in the second game. The Soaring Eagles, however, were unable to hang on.

"We were a little worried when they took the lead near the end of the second game," said Carley. "But we didn't let it get to us."

Carley also had five digs. Junior Jami Ferrebee collected 13 kills and senior libero Emily Green had 12 digs.

"Jami is getting very good at watching the other side," said Peterson. "I think that's why her kill numbers are coming up."

Hannahville senior Elyse Teeple hit five aces and Betsy Trudeau finished with five kills, including the one that stopped Carley's 19-point run.

"Overall, I'm pleased with the effort," said Hannahville coach Tom Ohman. "To be honest, I don't think we've gotten this type of effort all year. I thought our seniors gave a tremendous effort.

"As far as losing the lead at the end of Game 2, that's kind of the way it has been all year. We weren't getting good enough position to get the good bumps. We also didn't get our serves in. We just haven't been consistent."

What was it like hosting a district event for the first time?

"It's a lot of work, but we were happy to have the opportunity to host a district match," said Ohman. "Things went well.

"I could see in the warm-ups that the girls were excited. This group of girls has been successful in athletics, and I think they'll breed further success."

Big Bay de Noc - Carley (nine aces, five digs); Ferrebee (three aces, 13 kills) Dalgord (two aces, six assists); Swayer (one ace, three kills, five digs); Peterson (four kills, eight digs); LaLonde (eight assists, five digs); Green (12 digs).

Hannahville - Elyse Teeple (five aces, one kill); Trudeau (one ace, five kills); Erynn Teeple (two kills).
