ESCANABA - Bow hunting season is underway and hunters have a new item on the market to help them in their quest for that big buck.
Tim Harmon of Crystal Falls has developed his own line of bow string silencers for archery hunters, called String Hush. Harmon says the silencers are offered in wide and narrow designs.
"The wide design has more material to it so it will absorb more vibration," said Harmon. "With the narrow design, it's more geared toward compound bows where you might not need as much material on the string."
For hunters unsure which design will work best for their bow, both can be purchased together in a kit, which contains one set of each size.
"For the individual silencer, whether narrow or wide, it's $5 each. Or you can buy both together as a kit for $8.50," Harmon explained. "I wanted to make the kit affordable. It's an option for people who don't know exactly what they need. You get a lot for the money."
Harmon started with a bow and arrow in junior high and has been hunting for over 30 years. The 44-year-old gets out to hunt as many afternoons as he can.
"If I can be home from work by 3:30 or 4, I'm in the stand. My wife is so patient with me, she lets me hunt as much as I want to and I try not to burn that bridge," Harmon said.
Right now, Harmon is bear hunting. "That started about three weeks ago," he said. "I haven't shot anything yet. There's a female that's dominating the area. She is very big and very aggressive because she has two cubs. We can't shoot a female with cubs."
As for the string silencers, Harmon had never found one he felt worked well, so he decided to create his own. "I certainly like it, not that I'm biased," Harmon said with a laugh.
There are three primary colors that hold up best according to Harmon: green, tan and black. The silencers also come in white and brown.
String Hush bow string silencers can be ordered online through Harmon's website, Harmon Hunting Supplies, at www.harmonhuntingsupplies.web.officelive.comor at DJ Sports Shop in downtown Crystal Falls.
