Stupak’s vote on clean energy bill much appreciated

August 5, 2009
Daily Press

EDITOR:

We applaud U.S. Representative Bart Stupak of Menominee for his recent vote for the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES), which passed the U.S. House of Representatives on June 26. This comprehensive energy legislation has the potential to transform Michigan and the rest of America by creating clean energy jobs, improving our national security, and protecting our planet from global warming pollution.

After far too many years of inaction, missed opportunities, and major steps backwards, the American Clean Energy and Security Act will begin to move our country toward a new energy economy by putting a firm limit on global warming pollution, improving energy efficiency, and investing in renewable energy.

An opportunity such as this may only come along once in a generation, so we commend Representative Stupak for being on the right side of history.

While we are thrilled that the ACES bill passed the House, complimentary legislation in the Senate faces a very tough battle. Senators Levin and Stabenow need to hear from their constituents that voting "no" on this bill will be a vote for the broken energy policies of the past that have outsourced jobs, kept us dependent on foreign energy sources, and increased the dangers of climate change. Additionally, voting against a clean energy policy will delay economic recovery, which we cannot afford in Michigan.

Future generations will thank them for their leadership in improving our economy and ensuring a safer, healthier planet.
