Skate Jam contest in Gladstone

GLADSTONE - The Fourth of July Celebration in Gladstone today will boast a new and exciting event.

According to city officials and event sponsors, the 2009 Independence Day Skate Jam is set for 1 p.m. today.

Mike Williams, owner of Brampton Bike & Ski, said the event, which the city of Gladstone hopes becomes annual, is new this year and sponsored by the city, Brampton Bike & Ski, and D&M Subs.

"This is the first annual skateboard competition here in Gladstone," said Williams. "We did a trial run last year but this is the first official competition."

Cost will be $5 for late entrance. Late registration for the skate jam, held at Van Cleve Skate Park in Gladstone, begins today at noon, with the real competition beginning at 1 p.m.

Skaters of all ages are welcome to participate in the jam. Those under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian signature.

"The only requirement is that competitors wear a helmet," Williams said. "As of (Thursday), we have over 25 people signed up, ranging in age from 7 years old to up over 20."

The skate jam will include live music by Superior Sound Works, as well as many prizes and trophies.

"We'll have trophies for the four different age categories for first, second and third place," Williams said. "As well as skateboards, trucks, wheels, bearings and t-shirts for people in the competition as well as spectators."
