Safety around fireworks can save lives

ESCANABA - For many, fireworks are the highlight of Fourth of July celebrations. Unfortunately, fireworks can unexpectedly ruin the holiday when they are not handled with care.
Area officials are reminding people to take precautions while enjoying fireworks today because the "oohs and aahs" can turn into injuries and accidental fires.
"Use caution. These are flammable materials," said Capt. Bob Berbohm of Escanaba Public Safety, also coordinator of Delta County Emergency Management. "Always have adult supervision."
People make a variety of mistakes with fireworks but the first one - what they buy - is the most common mistake, Berbohm said.
"First, they purchase inappropriate fireworks - illegal fireworks," he said. "Second, they make the mistake of not knowing if fireworks are truly out. Like sparklers, when you're done with them, they should be put in a bucket of water."
Berbohm also advises never try to relight a dud firework.
"If a firework does not go off, let it sit for a half hour and then throw it in a bucket of water and soak," he said.
Another common mistake people make when lighting off fireworks is igniting them too close to other combustibles, sometimes causing accidental fires.
"Be sure you have enough room for you and your family to be safe," Berbohm added.
His final advice to those celebrating the holiday with fireworks is, "Have fun. Be safe."
The National Council on Fireworks Safety Web site offers the following tips on fireworks:
l Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them.
l Always have water handy such as a hose or bucket.
l Only use fireworks as intended. Don't try to alter them or combine them.
l Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter and the shooter should wear safety glasses.
l Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a "designated shooter."
l Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.
l Do not ever use homemade fireworks of illegal explosives: They can kill you.
