ESCANABA - A 26-year-old man, arrested for sexually assaulting an Escanaba woman earlier this week, was charged with rape in Delta County District Court on Friday.
Cedrick Halfaday, formerly of Cornell, was arraigned before County Magistrate Mark Hager who charged the suspect with first degree criminal sexual conduct for engaging in sexual penetration through force or coercion. The felony carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, Hager said.
Halfaday was arrested on the rape charge early Friday, according to officials at Escanaba Public Safety, the arresting agency. No other details were released.
Halfaday was also charged with a second count of larceny in a building for stealing cash, said Hager. The felony carries a maximum punishment of four years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
During his arraignment, Halfaday requested a court-appointed attorney. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on June 19 in district court.
Because of the seriousness of the complaints, Hager set Halfaday's bond at $25,000 cash. The defendant was ordered to have no contact with the victim. He also was ordered to not consume alcohol and be subject to a breath test at any time.
Halfaday told the court he does not have an address because he is not living anywhere.
