ESCANABA - The Community Action Agency's annual "Walk for Warmth" was successful in raising thousands of dollars for heating assistance Saturday.

The walk, which took place on Ludington Street in Escanaba, went well again this year, according to officials.

CAA Executive Assistant Cathy Pearson said the fund-raiser will be used to help local families in need.

"We collected about $9,500 at the walk itself," said Pearson, adding that there were about $17,000 in previous donations. She also said people may still drop their donation off at CAA, 507 1st Ave. S., Escanaba.

Pearson said the Rusty Rail also held a fund-raiser for CAA Saturday night - the Ride or Warmth, which took in about $1,500.

"We were really pleased in these economic times," she said.

Pearson said CAA will continue to accept funds for the Walk for Warmth campaign, hoping to help anyone who is having trouble with heating bills.

Walk for Warmth funds are used for heat assistance only, including natural gas, propane and wood heat sources.

"Last year we raised about $54,000, which was a record, and we spent $57,000, so we more than ran out," she said. "We helped about 220 people just out of Walk for Warmth."

Anyone who needs help with their heat can call Community Action at 786-7080 to make an appointment and they will tell you what you need to bring. For more information on Walk for Warmth, contact Cathy Pearson, executive assistant, at 786-7080.

Pearson said the annual Walk for Warmth fund-raiser has historically been well-attended by members of the community and local businesses.

"We are astounded every year at the support of the local community," she said.
