Team Electronics/earns Midget state slot

ESCANABA - Team Electronic/Alltel is heading to the state Midget hockey tournament, and they did it the hard way.

After losing Saturday to the Marquette Sentinels 3-0 in the first game of the best-of-three Upper Peninsula district in Marquette, Team Electronic/Alltel beat the Sentinels 3-2 and 1-0 Sunday to earn a state berth at Orchard Lake March 13-15.

Justyn Doucette sent Escanaba to the state by scoring at the 4:27 mark of the second period Sunday, with assists from Dan Williams and Devin Barton.

Austin Young had 42 saves in the title game.

Marquette had a 20-13 player advantage plus home ice.

Team Electronics/Alltel forced the decisive game Saturday evening by pulling out a 3-2 victory, with Doucette, Barton and Josh Gerou netting goals and Young earned the win. Ryan LaMarch had two assists and Gerou had one.

Gerou broke a 2-2 tie at 6:08 of the third period.

In the opener, Marquette scored with two seconds left in the second period, then added two goals in final 63 seconds of the game after Young was taken out for an extra skater.

"After watching these kids play all year, I have to say that this game was their best game ever," said team spokesman Sandi Young. "I have never seen them play as hard or so much as a team as they did this game (the finale)."

Meanwhile, Bosk PeeWees finished second in the District 8 playdowns in Calumet. All three teams finished 1-1, with Bosk second on the tiebreaker, a two-goal differential.

Bosk beat Keweenaw Storm 5-3 as TJ Myrick and Tyler Borkadi had two goals and PJ Nelson had a goal and playmaker and Derek Chaillier had a playmaker. Nick LeMire had 20 saves.

Bosk then dropped a 4-1 decision to Marquette, with Austin Banaszak scoring on an assist by Eli Harris. LeMire had 21 saves.

Ness Contracting Bantams won four games at Wells Sports Complex.

Saturday, Ness beat Negaunee 7-1 and 8-1, with Jesse Goudreau stopping a total of 25 shots. Bryce Wolf had a hat trick in the finale after scoring twice in the opener along with Nick Laviolette. Dan Ritter, Nick Vandermissen and Tyler Myrick also scored in the opener, with Vandermissen, Jake Eastin, Ben Lasecki, Dominic Wycoff and Cole Nivison scoring in the finale.

Sunday Ness whipped the Marquette Sentinels 8-0 and 10-0, with Goudreau rejecting a total of 20 shots.

Lasecki and Vandermissen scored twice in the opener, with Eastin, Myrick, Wyckoff and Cody Cousineau adding goals. Nivison had a playmaker.

Vandermissen had a hat trick in the nightcap, Wolf had two goals and Ritter, Eastin, Wycoff, Kyle Piehler and Andrew Bourdeau added goals. Cousineau had a playmaker.

Escanaba Mr. Klean beat Manistique Moose 9-1 and 4-1 Saturday in PeeWee games at Wells. Hunter Murray and Jake Rodman had hat tricks in the opener and Brennan Brandt had two goals in the nightcap. Riley Stenfors scored in each game, with Blaine Borman, Sergei LaMarche and Keegan Porath adding goals.

Sunday in Marquette, Mr. Klean lost 4-1 and tied 2-2 against Marquette Hockey Central. Rodman, Stenfors and Josh Nelson had the goals.
