ESCANABA - The former Jewel Sundelius was united in marriage with Donald Savage Oct. 30, 1948, at Sacred Heart Church in Schaffer. Original attendants were Bradley Savage, brother of the groom, and Betty Sovey, sister of the bride.
The special occasion was celebrated with a family reunion in Appleton, hosted by the couple's five children. All were in attendance including the grandchildren. The celebration continued at Donald's 80th birthday Nov. 13.
Donald graduated from Escanaba Area High School in 1948. He retired from Harnischfeger, Escanaba, upon its closing. He enjoys bicycling, small engine repairs and daily "coffee clutching" visits with his senior friends.
Jewel retired from F.W. Woolworth, Escanaba, upon its closing. She has done various crafts throughout her life and is currently involved in preparing "shoe boxes" each year to donate to Samaritan's Purse for Operation Christmas Child. She is also an avid doll collector.
The couple has five children - Ronald Savage of Abrams, Wis.; Dennis Savage of Phoenix; Donna (John) Hitzker of Addison, Ill.; Darlene (Jeff) Derocher of Escanaba; and Diana (Gerald) Derocher of Bark River. Donald and Jewel also have 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The couple received greetings from the White House in honor of their anniversary and Donald's 80th birthday.
