Delta Building one step closer to making historic register
By Dionna Harris
ESCANABA - The Delta Building, soon to be home to Lofts on Ludington, has been nominated to be added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The building, owned by Matt Sviland, received approval from the Michigan Preservation Review Board to have the building added to the National Register.
Sviland said the Preservation Review Board voted unanimously in a meeting Jan. 16 to add the building to the National Register.
Following approval from the state, the board's recommendation was forwarded to the National Register of Historic Places for consideration and an official listing in the register.
It is expected the Delta Building will be listed on the National Register within the next few months.
"We are very excited about the resounding support for our nomination request," said Sviland.
He also said he was thankful for the continued support and excitement the project is gathering. He added, the National Register is an important tool for preserving historic properties.
"Placement on the National Register is also in line with our ultimate goal of breathing new life into downtown Escanaba, through the renovation and rejuvenation of this historical landmark," he said.
The National Register of Historic Places is the nation's list of cultural resources worthy of preservation.
Currently Delta County has 18 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, while Michigan has more than 1,000 listings. The listings range from houses, commercial and residential areas, farm and factory complexes, cemeteries and parks, monuments, ships and shipwreck sites.
