MARQUETTE - Greg left us on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, while at home with loved ones. He was born in New Orleans, La., on May 1, 1959, and moved to Michigan as a toddler.

Greg went to high school in Munising and graduated from Northern Michigan University with degrees in criminal justice and business. He then graduated from Police Academy at Northern and also the University of Louisiana in Lafayette. He loved being a policeman in both Munising and Lafayette, La. After several years of being a policeman, he began to use his business degree in the insurance industry and joined the Mazzali Agency in Munising. Later he joined Employee Benefits Agency and Raymond James Investment Banking in Marquette as partner with Vincent Rose.

After 18 years in the insurance/benefits business, Greg decided to go back to college for a degree in community health. He was attending classes at Northern when he became ill early in 2008. Greg was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Greg is survived by his loving wife, Sandy; two children, Tiffany and Taylor Berg, and a granddaughter, Natalie, of Traverse City; his mother, Ray Berg, of Munising; three sisters, Donna Dupuis of South Milwaukee, Wis., Bridget (Mike) O'Boyle of Marquette, and Lisa (Dan) Case of Stanton, Mich.; six nieces and nephews; mother and father-in-law, Ken and Betty Nelson of Frederic, Wis.; and two brothers-in-law, Wally (Ann) and Curt (Wanda) Nelson.

Greg was much loved and we often said if love could cure him, he would have been cured a long time ago.

Services will be held on Sunday, Jan. 4, at Eden Lutheran Church in Munising, Mich. (1150 E. M-28). Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. with a memorial service at 3 p.m. led by Pastor Ilko Tchakarov of the Marquette SDA Church. Fellowship and a luncheon will follow the service. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is serving the family.
