Man gets prison for Escanaba break-ins

ESCANABA - An Escanaba man was sentenced to up to 20 years in prison Monday on charges related to two break-ins at local businesses this summer, according to Delta County Circuit Court officials.

James William Haack, 28, of 111 N. 3rd St., was sentenced to 42 months to 20 years in prison for habitual offender, third offense, with the underlying offense of breaking and entering a building with intent. The charge stems from a break-in at Professional Property Management, 225 S. 10th St., Escanaba.

He was also sentenced to a concurrent sentence of 34 months to 20 years in prison for habitual offender, third offense, with the underlying offense of breaking and entering, entry without breaking with intent. The charge stems from a break-in at Just For Her, 917 Ludington St.

In addition to the prison time, Haack was ordered to pay $240 in fines and costs.

Motorcyclist killed in crash with SUV

NEGAUNEE - A SUV-motorcycle crash in Negaunee Township resulted in the death of a 58-year old man Monday.

James Davis, Ishpeming, was pronounced dead at the scene.

State Police from the Negaunee Post were dispatched to the crash at 3:39 p.m. The other driver was Haydn Madigan, 31, Marquette.

The accident occurred when Madigan was eastbound in his 2008 Chevrolet Trail Blazer on County Road 492, near Pump House Road in Negaunee Township. He crossed into the westbound lane and collided with Davis, troopers said. Davis was westbound on a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Madigan sought treatment at Marquette General Hospital, but had no visible injuries and was released.

Troopers were assisted by the Negaunee Township Fire Department, Marquette General Hospital Emergency Medical Service, and Medi-Ride.

Investigation is continuing.

Two local eateries close their doors

ESCANABA - Two local restaurants have closed their doors.

The Log Cabin Grille & Bistro Chef Paul Bohm announced the closure of his restaurant via e-mail to his customers. He attributed the changes in the way business is done in a trying economy as the reason for the closure.

Fazoli's on North Lincoln Road was closed as of Wednesday. Building owner George Niemi, Menominee, did not respond to messages last week or Monday. There have been indications the building will reopen under a new franchise name.

USMC fund-raiser this weekend

ESCANABA - The U.S. Marine Corps League of Delta County will participate in a fund-raiser this weekend.

Candy bars from Sayklly's with the USMC logo will be sold for $1 Friday at Wal-Mart and Super One and Saturday at Elmer's County Market. USMC members will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

Proceeds will be used for Toys For Tots and the library fund.

Tickets on sale for Escanaba musical

ESCANABA - Tickets are now on sale for Escanaba High School Fine Arts Department's annual fall musical. "Thoroughly Modern Millie" is a high-spirited musical romp that has everyone dancing the Charleston, organizers said.

The musical, which took Broadway by storm in 2002, tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to New York City in 1922, in search of a new life for herself. Full of intrigue, jazzy new songs, and bright dance numbers, "Thoroughly Modern Millie" also features frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences love to hate.The show is based on a popular 1960's movie of the same name.

Show dates are Nov. 21, 22, 24, and 25 at the Escanaba High School auditorium.

Tickets can be purchased for $10 at the school's main office from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and will also be available during parent- teacher conferences this Thursday.
