LeCuyer advances to world tourney
ESCANABA - The grandson of Escanaba residents has qualified to compete in a world championship event.
Tom LeCuyer of Plano, Ill. earned a silver medal at the World Team Trials for Submission Grappling recently. LeCuyer earned All-American status and a berth on the U.S. team that will compete Dec. 20-21 in Lucerne, Switzerland.
LeCuyer, the grandson of Raymond Boudreau and Catherine (Joan) Boudreau of Escanaba, is the son of Tom and Dee (Katherine Boudreau) Lecuyer of Plano.
Submission grappling is a cross between wrestling, judo and jujitsu.
LeCuyer, with Atlas Xtreme Team and K3 Kombat, was ranked sixth in the country at 154 pounds after earning a gold medal and Grappler of the Tournament at a regional qualifier in Chicago.
He is a three-time high school wrestling champion and was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Hall of Fame in April.

Junior Hockey goalie clinic set for Sunday
ESCANABA - The Escanaba Amateur Junior Hockey Association is hosting its half of a specialized clinic for goaltenders and coaches Sunday. The clinic goes from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.
EAJHA joined with Kingsford and Iron Mountain to hire Between the Pipes Clinics to provide goalie training for the kids and work with coaches who may not be that knowledgeable about working with goalies. The two-day clinic is Saturday in Iron Mountain and Sunday in Escanaba.

U.P. drivers receive awards
MILWAUKEE - Two Upper Peninsula drivers received world championship rings Thursday at the Night of Champions Awards Banquet.
Chad Hord of Felchwon the PRO Light Pickup division and Matt Dale of Skandia was the Grassroots Enduro winner.
John Mason of Plymouth, Wis. and Dan Vanden Heuvel of Appleton shared the WSORR Pro Driver of the Year award and Keith Steele of Madison was named top Sportsman driver. Dave Waldvogel of Fond du Lac was PRO rookie of the year.
It was also announced the Potawatomi Bingo and Casino will host Lucas Oil World Series of Off-Road Racing July 10-12 and Aug. 8-9.
