Council buys poles, transformers

ESCANABA - Council took action on several electric-related items Thursday.

Council approved the purchase of electric poles for $47,873 from Bell Lumber & Pole, New Brighton, Minn. Also approved was purchase of transformers for $34,810 from Champion, Iron Mountain. Both items are included in the 2008-09 budget.

Also budgeted is funding for pole inspection and pole treatment. Council agreed to hire out these services to Utility Pole Technologies, Willow Grove, Pa., at an amount not to exceed $10,000.

Council approved a $11,864 contract with El-Com Services., Marquette, to cover maintenance on the city's communication equipment including radios at public safety. The contract provides 24-hour service on core equipment. Funding is included in the 2008-09 budget.

In other business, council passed a resolution declaring Oct. 29 as a day of recognition for the Youth Assistance Program (YAP). The volunteer organization raises monies to provide grants for needy school-aged children to support their emotional and physical well-being.

YAP will celebrate its 20th anniversary during the Business After Hours gathering at Hilltop RV Superstore Oct. 29.
