GLADSTONE - Hometown runners were well served in the Second Annual Gladstone Cross Country Fun Run Saturday as they swept to 11 age division titles.
Gladstone HIgh School cross country coach Gary Whitmer was the overall winner, covering the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 14 seconds. He was followed by Braves' harriers John Cretens (19:33) and Caleb Whitmer (19:39).
"I went out relaxed," said Gary. "I ran six miles with the kids in practice Friday, but I didn't struggle today. I slowed up about 10 minutes per mile after the first mile and ran the last two pretty even. We just wanted to do a tempo run."
Laurie Alworden was crowned women's champion in 23:12, followed by Braves' harrier Emily Whitmer (24:26) and Joanie Stacey of Escanaba (24:38).
Dan Peterson of Gladstone was overall winner of the kids' 1-K run in 5:14. Taylor Schone of Gladstone topped the girls at 5:38.
The event, which drew approximately 65 runners, was held under sunny and humid conditions with temperatures in the low 80s.
"Jessica Lung kind of orchestrated everything, and the kids did a nice job organizing this event," said Gary. "We also appreciate the support we get from the community."
