Gloria J. McCullough ‘Gitchianakwudquay’

HANNAHVILLE - Gloria J. McCullough "Gitchianakwudquay," 67, passed away early Thursday morning, Aug. 14, 2008, at the home of her daughter, Victoria Dowd in Hannahville. She resided at Christian Park Village from January of 2007 until this past June.

She was born in Hannahville on May 3, 1941, the daughter of Peter A. and Emma R. (Keshick) Meshigaud. In 1959, Gloria graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Adrian, Mich., with high honors.

The former Gloria Meshigaud married Jerome W. McCullough Sr. in November of 1960 in Escanaba. He preceded her in death.

In the early 1970s, Gloria worked as a tribal administrator. She then became the tribal judge from 1980 to 1994 and was a member of the National American Indian Judges Association.

She was an active member of the Hannahville Community. Gloria was instrumental in securing funding and grant monies to build the Hannahville Indian School, where she served on the board and also was the administrator in 1978.

Gloria was a member of the Developmental Disability Council in 2002 and the Delta County Regional Interagency Coordinating Council, receiving a certificate of congressional recognition.

She also received a letter of commendation and thank you for her hard work and dedication to serving the needs of residents of Delta County and the state of Michigan from the office of Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm. Other accomplishments include receiving the Michigan 150 First Lady Award in November of 1987 (Michigan sesquicentennial year).

She was Catholic by faith and was also a member of the Three Fires Miidewiin Society.

Survivors include 10 children and many grandchildren, Victoria J. Dowd of Wilson and her children, Ongeequay, Jason, and Jon Dowd; David A. (Renata) McCullough of Wyoming, Mich.; Jerome W. McCullough Jr. of Escanaba; Anthony W. McCullough Sr. of Escanaba and his children, Rufus, Tony, Ray Boy, Zachary, and Myron McCullough; Jessica J. McCullough (Roger Manitowabi) of Wilson and their children, Olivia, Sophie, and Natalie Manitowabi; Phoebe A. "Bear" O'Brien (Donald Ray) of Wilson and her children, Ogeema Anziano, Gitchi-Anakwud McCullough, Alicia and Samuel O'Brien; Mitchell B. McCullough Sr. (Tonya Smith) of Wilson and his children, Krista, Kayla, Mitchell Jr. and Jaymen McCullough; Judy A. McCullough (Howard Webkamigad) of Kincheloe, and their children, Kasey and Jacob McCullough, Hannah and Madison Bartol, and Gegek Webkamigad; Jody A. McCullough of Wilson and his daughter, Haley A. McCullough; and Pushkwaydahshin "Dallas" McCullough of Marquette.

She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Amber and Kyle Dowd of Sault Ste. Marie, Justin, Abbie, and Zachary Dowd of Baraga, Evan James Johnson of Escanaba, Lenaya Lee Jade Halfaday-Anziano of Hannahville, Jasmin and Carla; sisters, Bonnie G. Meshigaud of Hannahville, Rita Belle Polfus (Roger Bell) of Hannahville, and Noreena Meshigaud of Hannahville; and brothers, Reginald "Gus" Meshigaud of Hannahville, Gary Meshigaud of Hannahville, and Myron "Joe" Meshigaud of Hannahville; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation began on Thursday at the home of Victoria Dowd and will continue until Saturday when visitation will continue at the Hannahville Community Center at 4 p.m. with the traditional ceremony to follow on Sunday at 8 a.m. Eulogies will be given by Thomas Smithson, Gary Duemann, and Ruth Oja.

Burial will be in Hannahville Cemetery. The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the McCullough family with arrangements.
