ESCANABA - Olive Evelyn Cathcart, 100, of Escanaba passed away Wednesday July 23, 2008, at Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba. Olive was a resident of Bishop Noa Home for the last seven years.
She was born Sept. 5, 1907, in Escanaba and was the daughter of Swedish immigrants Oscar and Eva (Kjellberg) Gidlund. Olive attended school in Escanaba and graduated from Escanaba High School in 1925. She was employed at Dr. Howard Johnson, DDS dental office. The former Olive E. Gidlund married Alex Cathcart on Aug. 15, 1929 and he preceded her in death on Oct. 26, 1993. Olive was the oldest member of the Central United Methodist Church. She was a very active member of the church singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, working on the pasty crew and was a member of the women's society at church. She also sang at many weddings and funerals. Olive enjoyed children and she was considered everyone's grandmother.
Olive Evelyn Cathcart is survived by daughter, Suzanne (Donald) Allardyce of Escanaba; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a brother, Everett Gidlund, and sister, Eloise Tweedy.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. noon Saturday July 26, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Olive E. Cathcart will be held at noon Saturday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Harmon from the Central United Church officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services at the Central United Methodist Church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to the Memorial United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at the Anderson Funeral Home.
