Myllyla wins club title

IRON MOUNTAIN - Jim Myllyla has won another club championship. This time at Pine Grove Country Club.

The 1985 Escanaba Country Club king strung together a 183 (73, 74, 36) over 45 holes in taking the Pine Grove title Sunday.

Paul Bujold and Randy Ellis tied for second at 187 while defending champion Tom LaVigne and Jim Markell shared fourth at 188.

Zambon's MX Park hosting Northern Cup

BARK RIVER - American Motorcycle Association Northern Cup Motocross racing is returning to Zambon's MX Park in Bark River Saturday and Sunday.

Practice starts at 8 a.m. with racing at 10 both days. More than 300 racers of all ages will bring their dirt bikes and ATVs to the one-mile course.

Cost is $10 per person at the gate with 5 and under admitted free. Concessions are available on site, coolers and lawn chairs are welcome.

Lighthouse Run/Walk

ESCANABA - The Lighthouse five-kilometer Run/Walk is set for Saturday at 9 a.m. Registration begins at 7:30 in the Ludington Park Band Shell. Entry fee is $15. For details contact Mary Feuerbach (280-0661).

Highland golf

HYDE - Mark Ray shot 33 Tuesday in the Highland Golf Club men's league. Brian Robinette had 36, Dave Lampinen and Jerry Sundquist 37, Dennis Dittrich, Pete Hirn and Doug Motto 38 and Brian Warren, Brian Scheeneman, Jeff Lampi and Kevin Vogel 39.

Simon picks LSSU

MARQUETTE - Two-time All-U.P. basketball selection Mark Simon of Marquette has made a verbal commitment to play at Lake Superior State.

The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 20 points a game last season. He has scored 1,016 points in three seasons.

Simon also considered Minnesota-Duluth and Northwood Institute. His father, Mark, played at Northern Michigan University.

Miners tab coach

NEGAUNEE - Fred Dick has been named hockey coach at Negaunee High School. He replaces Tim Gannon, who spent four seasons at the helm.

Dick has been coaching the Negaunee Midget BB team.

Street hockey

MARQUETTE - The third annual Hockey Midwest Streetfest will be held Saturday in the back lot of the Berry Events Center. Registration begins at 8:30 and games start at 9. It is for ages 5-through-adult, with a minimum of five players per team. Entry fee is $20 per player. For details, contact Morey Gare (906-226-7155 or email mlgare@hotmail.com).

Youth baseball

NORWAY - Last Chance Tournament, featuring U10 and U12 Little League baseball teams, will be held Aug. 1-3 at Marion Park.

Entry fee is $100 per team. First eight teams in each division will be accepted.

Highland women

HYDE - Amy Stupak, Denise Porath and Mary Gauthier shared top honors Wednesday in the Highland Golf Club women's league by shooting 42. Joyce Land, Pat Hollo, Diane Cannon and Laurel Starnes had 44, Nicky Hosking, Sarah Nault, Judy Sabourin and Katie Kitson 45, Jayne Mackowiak 46, Helen Veeser, Wilma Hosking, Candy Swetkis, Karolyn Berhow, Karen Ettenhofer and Rose Peltier 47 and Carol Terres and Patti Dittrich 49.
