ESCANABA - Jean L. McLaughlin, 84, 2112 13th Ave. S., Escanaba, passed away on Wednesday evening, July 2, 2008, at Lakeview Assisted Living in Gladstone.
She was born on April 21, 1924, in Escanaba, the daughter of Frank and Rose (Stock) McLaughlin.
Jean graduated from Escanaba Senior High School, graduating in 1943.
During World War II, she worked at the Cal Shipyard in Long Beach, Calif. Then after moving to the Chicago area, Jean worked for Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a clerk for 32 years.
Jean was on the bowling team for Northwestern and received many awards at the yearly banquets. She also loved horse racing at Arlington Park in Chicago.
She returned to Escanaba in 1992.
She was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks Union.
After retirement, Jean and her sister, Ursula, traveled to Ireland, Central Europe, Hong Kong, Canadian Rockies, and cruised the Hawaiian Islands and then back to California.
They also traveled to Boston, New York, East Coast of Canada, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland.
Jean loved dancing, going to the casino and for rides around the beautiful U.P. She will always be remembered as a very patient person who never complained.
Among the survivors include her sister, Ursula Sullivan of Fresno, Calif., and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her sisters, Pat Sullivan and Anna Mae Boyer, and brothers, Vincent and Owen McLaughlin.
Visitation will be on Saturday, July 12, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba with the Mass of Christian Burial to follow at noon at St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church with Rev. Eric Olson officiating. A luncheon will be served following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Burial will be in Gardens of Rest Cemetery on Monday at 9 a.m.
The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the McLaughlin family with arrangements.
