Casey-Williams win couples golf

GLADSTONE - Meghan Casey and Justin Williams shot a pair of 67s over the weekend to win the Pro-Scotch Couples tournament at the Gladstone Golf Club.

The Escanaba Country Club members finished at 134, eight strokes ahead of Bob and Barb Gedvick of Norway Oak Crest.

Bob Davison and Lisa Lacasse of Gladstone were third at 143, Art and Sandy Baron of Menominee North Shore had 144 and Joe and Diane Moberg of Gladstone hit 145.

Flight winners:

First - Bob Gray-Sarah Lustick, Gladstone, 145; Second - Jason Valiquette-Wendy Depuydt, Gladstone, 150; Third - Mark and Ann Yowell, Terrace Bluff, 152; Fourth - Leo and Nona Niemi, Munising, 158; Fifth - John-Gerri Miljour, Gladstone, 80 (Sunday's score only).

Croatian golf

HYDE - The 38th annual Croatian Open golf tournament will be held Sunday at the Highland Golf Club. Registration begins at 1 p.m. and tee offs at 1:30. Dinner will be served at 5:30. Highland women

HYDE - Jayne Mackowiak and Amy Stupak shot 45 in the women's league Wednesday at the Highland Golf Club. Denise Porath had 46, Anna Larson, Judy Sabourin and Laurel Starnes 47, Pat Hollo, Joyce Land and Sarah Nault 48 and Nicky Hosking, Katie Kitson and Helen Veeser 49.

Jr. Cubs go 1-3 in Alpena tournament

ALPENA - The Escanaba Junior American Legion Cubs finished 1-3 in a tournament here over the weekend.

The Junior Cubs beat Sault Ste. Marie 6-2 in their second game, which began Saturday and ended Sunday morning because of rain.

Max Vandeweille pitched a four-hitter and collected two hits. Aaron Holland had three hits for Escanaba.

The teams met again 15 minutes later, but this time Sault won 12-11 by erasing a 9-2 deficit in the bottom of the second. Seth Cassell was 4-for-4 while Holland had three hits and Vandeweille, Tyler Englund and Mark Gauthier had two hits.

Fifteen minutes later the Cubs played Alpena and dropped a 10-1 decision that ended with a downpour in the fourth inning. Frankie Parks had two hits and Ben Kloss suffered the loss.

Alpena beat the Cubs 9-4 in the opener, pinning the loss on Englund. The Cubs (14-8-1) had four hits.

Irish Oaks scramble

GLADSTONE - The registration deadline for the three-woman scramble at Irish Oaks Golf Course July 12 has been extended.

Fee is $165 per team and includes a free round. For more information, call Sharon Pinar (428-9507) or Joyce Beach (428-4014).

Casperson putts to Bluff junior victory

GLADSTONE - Dane Casperson won a putt-off with Hans Ahola to win the boys' 13- to 15-year-old division of a junior golf tournament at Terrace Bluff Golf and Country Club this weekend.

He and Ahola tied with 46 for nine hole. Richie Hubert was third with 48.

Samantha Walters was the only girl in the age group, hitting 77.

In the girls' 10-12 division (four holes), Callie Jensen won with a 30, followed by Gabby Movalson's 32 and a 49 from Paige Cavadaeus.

Alex Lamberg also finished with 30 to win the 10-12 boys' division, followed by Nick Becotte (31) and Tyler Corwin (34).

Braeden Lamberg won a putt-off in the boys' 7- to 9-year-old division. Both he and Brad Spindler took 10 strokes. John Kositzky had 12.

Elizabeth Stephenson was the top girl at 15, followed by Katie Stephenson (20) and Karissa Kuchenberg (22).
