ESCANABA — Adam Roach made his first Upper Peninsula road race a memorable one Saturday, earning top honors in the Second Annual Salvation Army Home Run.

The Saginaw resident covered the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) course in 31 minutes, 37 seconds, followed by Marquette runners Tracy Lokken (32:02) and Mike Camilli (35:05).

“I took off at the start to see if anybody would go with me.,” said Roach. “I just tried to hold that pace and Tracy stayed right with me. I really enjoyed coming up here. This is a real nice race. I like races with a local flavor to them.”

This marked Lokken’s first race since April 21 when he placed 35th in the Boston Marathon.

“I’m really pleased with my time,” said Lokken. “Right now, I’m just trying to catch my breath. I thought about doing the 5-K, but decided to do the 10-K because I hadn’t raced that distance in about two years. I had been doing longer races in preparation for Boston.”

Tammy Lyberg of Gladstone was crowned women’s champion in 39:11. Melanie Bicigo of Marquette (43:21) and Karen Hackstock of Kingsford (45:27).

“I was shooting for 6:20 miles,” said Lyberg, who took the women’s title in the Glass City Marathon at Toledo, Ohio this spring. “I’ve been bothered by an ankle injury and haven’t been able to train very much. I tried to keep up with the guys for a little while, then I backed off.”

In the 5-K, Mo Waite of Saginaw was overall winner (16:08), followed by Alex Tiseo of Marquette (16:27) and Gary Whitmer of Gladstone (17:05).

Joan Stacey of Escanaba topped the women (21:01), followed by Ingrid Fjeldheim of Marquette (21:16) and Kaitlin Hobbs of Lansing (21:29).

The event, held under sunny and seasonably cool conditions, drew more than 200 runners and walkers.
