Resident announces candidacy for state House

April 15, 2008
Daily Press
ESCANABA — Area resident Mike Falcon announced he is running for the 108th District of the Michigan House of Representatives.

Falcon, a Republican, made the announcement at a kick-off event in Escanaba this morning. He continued on a three-stop tour of the district today with additional stops in Menominee and Iron Mountain.

Falcon, 39, of Gladstone, believes that turning our state around begins by having a collective effort of all. “It’s not about yesterday — it’s about tomorrow, it’s about the people of the Upper Peninsula, Michigan and their future. We need to put the people first in our decisions and put the people back into politics,” said Falcon.

In addition, Falcon sees that regardless of political affiliation, the people of the U.P. share more in common than they don’t. “Over the last few months, I have listened to the people and I hear the cries for good jobs, the cries that our freedoms are being taken away, the cries of our schools and declining enrollment. I heard the cries of our communities batteling with soaring costs of living and I have heard the cries of our veterans, and truly understand the concept that “freedom is not free. Let me make this perfectly clear — your fights are now my fights,” Falcon said.

Falcon said he has a firm belief in self-servitude. He served in the miliary for nine years and through numerous campaigns such as Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shied and Operation Provide Hope.

He holds an associate degree (Phi Theta Kappa) from Bay College, a bachelor’s (Summa Cum Laude) and master of public administration (with honors) from Northern Michigan University. He has worked for NMU for nearly 10 years with six of those years providing educational opportunities for youth at Bay College as the head of the Bay Regional Center. Currently, Falcon is in charge of off-campus programming throughout the U.P., specifically working on teacher programs.

Falcon, his wife Darla, and three sons, Michael (away at college), Matthew and John live in Gladstone. Mike chaired various county boards over the years and is involved with the community. He is a member of the National Rifle Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 71, Michigan Continuing Education Association, Upper Peninsula Economic Development Association, Michigan High School Athletic Association, soccer referee, Kiwanis and a member of the UAW 2178. Falcon and his family are active parishioners at All Saints Church in Gladstone.

Falcon is seeking the seat currently held by state Rep. Tom Casperson, R-Escanaba. Casperson is not seeking re-election as state representative due to term limits.
