MARQUETTE — Three girls who will be going on to the next level have earned Dream Team status in Upper Peninsula basketball.
Jessica Racine of Westwood has a scholarship to Michigan Tech, Lauren Beeler of L’Anse has a scholarship to Northern Michigan and Chelsie Wealton of Westwood will play at Northland College.
Joining them on the all-class team are Jessica Roell of North Dickinson and Jessica Duncan of Cedarville. Duncan is a junior, the others are seniors.
They were among a group of 10 nominees in voting Wednesday by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association at NMU.
Racine and Wealton led Westwood to a 24-1 overall mark, with the tourney run ending at the quarterfinal level. Racine scored 1,041 points in her career, one more than Wealton.
Racine averaged 16.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.4 steals and two assists this season. She was also Player of the Year in the Mid-Peninsula Conference.
Wealton averaged 15.6 points, three rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.5 steals. She hit 54 3-point baskets.
Beeler averaged 18.9 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.6 assists as L’Anse finished 18-3. Two losses were inflicted by Houghton. She was MVP of the West Pac Conference.
Roell, MVP of the Skyline Conference after leading the Nordics to their first league title, averaged 17.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, three assists and 2.7 steals. She ended her career with 1,229 points.
Duncan led Cedarville to Class D Team of the Year honors and a berth in the semifinals. The Eastern U.P. Conference MVP averaged 16.2 points by sinking 56 triples. She also had 127 assists and 82 steals.
Beeler and Racine were unanimous choices and Roell missed that by one vote.
The seniors will be play in the 23rd annual U.P. All-Star Classic June 21 in Escanaba.
