Drain commissioner receiving pay cut

ESCANABA — The drain commissioner’s salary will be reduced by $1,000 following the action of the Delta County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday.

Effective Jan. 1, 2009, the drain commissioner’s salary will be reduced, which will be added to the position’s travel budget for expenses and travel.

Don Shirley is the drain commissioner. He is currently paid $6,770.

The county board may only reduce an elected official’s compensation at the beginning of a term in office.

In other action, the board:

• will hold a committee of the whole meeting on Thursday at 5:15 p.m. or 10 a.m. on April 8 to approve the non-union paralegal position in the prosecutor’s office with a salary of $36,000 with defined contribution and a health savings account or $250 payment in lieu of benefits.

• adopted a two-year agreement with the 10 townships that are not currently doing their own zoning to charge a county zoning fee of 50 cents per capita.

• accepted four proposals from Alert Electronics, Inc. to replace cameras at the Courthouse. They are to replace eight exterior cameras with color day/night cameras for $3,400, replace eight interior cameras with color intensifier cameras for $2,800, replace an existing digital video recorder for $3,600 and relocate CCTV equipment from second floor to basement server room for $3,950. Bids will be requested.

• adopted a proclamation marking April as Head Start Month. The Menominee Delta Schoolcraft Community Action Agency has been operating the Head Start program in the local community since 1966 and currently provides services to 368 young children and their families through federal Head Start and Early Start funding.

During the week of April 14, the accomplishments of the local Head Start Program throughout early childhood centers and the community will be celebrated. Since 1965, Head Start has been a national model program with proven success in long-term child and family impact.
