ESCANABA — Known for its numerous scenic attractions and winter escapes, the Upper Peninsula is among the 50 best family vacations, according to Disney Family Travel.

Disney Family Travel (www.family.com/travel) is a newly-launched travel site designed for families with kids of all ages and interests.

The 50 Best Family Vacations is a unique guide of the top 50 fun and accessible destinations in America compiled by parents, travel experts and Family.com editors.

Steve Masters, executive director of Bays de Noc Convention & Visitors Bureau, said the area is very friendly, has a low crime rate, great customer service and natural resources.

“And we are very fortunate in the Upper Peninsula in that what we take for granted, the way we live, low crime rate, great restaurants, great natural beauty and three Great Lakes that touch the U.P.,” Masters said. “We’re lucky that we are immersed in this beauty and forget that people want to vacation where we live.”

The Disney Family.com Travel Website includes content, search and community elements, allowing families to customize their vacation plans.

Masters said families can follow the itinerary on the Disney Family Website and can visit Palms Brook State Park, Peninsula Point Lighthouse, Sand Point Lighthouse and enjoy water sports or the 211 miles of coastline in Delta County.

He added families can also enjoy one of the U.P.’s many parks, go hiking, biking, fishing or enjoy the Hiawatha National Forest.

“Depending on the time of year they come, they can attend one of the many community events that occur throughout the year,” he said.

For each of the Disney Family.com Travel 50 Best Family Vacation destinations, the Web site provides age-appropriate recommendations for places to stay and eat, maps, actual video tours of family vacations, fun facts and other activities.

“Any time we get national exposure like this we do get an increase in requests for information, and we will make sure our Website (www.deltami.org) and the information we have in the office is optimized for those people requesting information about our area,” said Vickie Micheau, executive director for Delta County Chamber of Commerce. “Typically what we will do is we will modify our advertising and promotional efforts.”

Masters said the summer and the fall is when the U.P. gets a majority of its visitors.

The following destinations are also among Disney Family.com Travel’s 50 Best Family Vacations: Yellowstone National Park,

San Diego, Orlando, San Francisco, Grand Canyon, Chicago, Washington, D.C., San Antonio and Oahu, Hawaii.

“The Top 50 Best Family Vacations list includes the best of the best in family travel. We spoke with hundreds of parents and parenting experts to determine both areas of the country and attractions that have fun activities for every family,” said Emily Smith, Vice-President of the Disney Family Group.
