Cub-O-Ree offers cool competition

March 3, 2008

RAPID RIVER — Despite cool temperatures, a plentiful supply of snow and a healthy desire for some long-awaited outdoor competition led nearly seventy Cub Scouts and Webelos of the Redbuck District recently gathered for the annual Cub-O-Ree, held Feb. 16 at the Rapid River stockyards. A favorite component of the event called for each Red Buck Pack in attendance to host an event as part of the winter fun activities.

Attending the Cub-O-Ree were Packs 402 (Manistique), 405 (Soo Hill), 411 (Escanaba), 414 (Escanaba), 445 (Bark River), 471 (Gladstone), 473 (Flat Rock) and 488 (Rapid River). Events included snowshoeing, relay race, walk the line, tied in knots, ski Team, run the maze, peanut walk and atomic bomb. In addition, there were two events specifically for Webelos — the catapult and Webelos tracking. Boy Scouts from Troop 411 (Escanaba) assisted by overseeing the Webelos tracking; Troop 488 (Rapid River) supervised the catapult.

First-place winners in each Pack, listed by event and Troop number: Relay Race, 405; Peanut Race, P-414; Ski Team, 411; Atomic Bomb, 411; Run the Maze, 473; Snowshoeing, 411; Walk the Line, 414; Tied in Knots, 414; Catapult, 445; and Webelos Tracking, 445. The Traveling Trophy was awarded to the Pack with the highest percentage of their total membership in attendance. Pack 405 (Soo Hill), with Brandy McDonald as Cub Master, took home the Traveling Trophy.

The Adult Challenge awarded to the top adults from a Pack for running the maze was won by Pack 488 (Rapid River), Joe Wilson Cub Master.
