Cougars nudge BR-H

POSTED: February 22, 2008

EBEN — The Superior Central boys found their shooting touch at crunch time Thursday night as they surged to a 51-46 basketball victory over the Bark River-Harris Broncos.

BR-H led much of second half until Jordan Chartier sank a 3-point shot to send the Cougars ahead 44-43 with slightly more 60 seconds left in the Central U.P. Conference contest.

“We hit some shots and free throws down the stretch and that was the game,” said Cougars’ coach Cary Chartier. “We slowed their offense down. We were in a little foul trouble and went into a zone, which enabled us to rebound a little. Ben Richard had some nice blocked shots to set us up.”

The Cougars (14-6 overall, 7-5 CUP) led 17-10 after the first quarter, but trailed 21-20 at halftime.

“We had a good run in the first quarter,” said coach Chartier. “Then, we didn’t hit any shots in the second quarter and still struggled in the third.”

Justin Chartier paced the Cougars with 18 points and Jordan Chartier had 11. Brad Ives matched a career-high 18 points for BR-H (10-10 overall, 7-5 CUP)

The Broncos held a 36-23 rebounding advantage, hit 17-of-43 field goals and committed 18 turnovers. The Cougars converted 17-of-40 shots, including all five of their trifectas. They had 13 miscues.

Superior Central also won the jayvee game 44-31.
