The Weather Channel has selected the Upper Peninsula as one of the top 10 family winter getaway travel destinations in the country — alongside such popular travel spots as Joshua Tree National Park in California and Lake Tahoe in Nevada.
“It’s a good thing,” said Steve Masters, director of the Bays de Noc Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We’re in with some darn good destinations. Does it get any better?”
Masters said the list is displayed on the Weather Channel’s Web site, ranked by GORP, an Internet resource for adventure travel and outdoor recreation. The U.P. is ranked sixth.
“If your brood embraces even the heaviest snows of deepest winter, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a can’t-miss destination for your family,” the Web site said. It continues, adding the “U.P. is chock-full of quaint little villages and historic mining towns.”
The U.P. also recently made Sherman’s Travel Magazine’s top 10 list for summer travel destinations in the world, Masters said, ranking among spots such as the Capris Islands and Scandinavia. The list was picked up and broadcast by MSNBC, he said.
As well, NBC rated the Upper Peninsula as one of the best “offbeat places” to see fall color.
“As tough as the economy is right now, as tough as it is for motels and hotels — anything we can use to increase business in the area is good news,” Masters said.
The Web site ranking the top 10 family winter getaways also includes a synopsis of each of the destinations.
Delta County Area Chamber of Commerce Director Vickie Michaeu said she is pleased and enthused with the designation.
“It’s fabulous. We are going to make sure Delta County is optimized as best we possibly can,” she said, adding that when people are online searching for information about the U.P., Delta County will be listed as a winter getaway site as a result of the designation.
Michaeu said when the U.P. was named in Sherman’s list and as a fall color destination, there was increased activity.
“Even when Mackinac Island gets mentioned, there are more requests for information out of this commerce center,” she said. “No. 6 is good. Anytime you’re in a top 10 that’s good.”
Masters, as well, anticipated informing the public of the designation.
“We’re just excited. Hopefully we will continue to get the word out that the U.P. is a great place to vacation in any season,” he said. “Hopefully, people will continue to stay in Delta County — it’s the heart of the U.P.”
