Benefit planned for Hurkman baby
ESCANABA — A benefit dinner is being planned for Mason Gingras (Hurkman), infant son of Kristina Hurkman and Tom Gingras of Escanaba. The dinner will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Wells Township Hall in Arnold. Cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 12 and under.
Mason was born premature with his intestines on the outside and had to have emergency surgery. He is currently recovering at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Green Bay. All proceeds will go the help the family with medical and travel expenses. For more information call Crystal Vanelsacker at (906) 280-3269.

Extended hours at Family History Center
ESCANABA — The Escanaba Family History Center has extended its hours. The center will now be open Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Richard Reiffers, a consultant in German research, will be at the FHC to guide family tree researchers.
Regular hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information about the center and its resources, contact the center at (906) 789-0370, or Diana Berrigan, (906) 786-3510.

Gladstone Seniors announce updates
ESCANABA — The Gladstone Senior Citizens Non-Profit Corporation board meeting for January has been moved to Jan. 22.
The Pancake Breakfasts will be canceled until March.
The Electrical, Heating, and Air Conditioning Renovation Project will be completed the first week of December. Memorial gifts and donations are being accepted to fund this major renovation. The corporation appreciates everyone’s efforts cooperation during this renovation process.
The 2008 $5 membership dues are now being collected. Members paid by Jan. 21 will be placed in a drawing for three free Annual Meeting Dinners.

ESCANABA — Our Place Drop-in Center, affiliated with Pathways Community Mental Health, provides activities and companionship for people with disabilities and those unable to work. Located at 429 S. 10th St., Escanaba, the center is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ESCANABA — Delta County Right to Life has announced its plans to mark the 35th anniversary, Jan. 22, of the Roe V. Wade decision that legalized abortion. Plans include a special billboard on the corner of Ludington and 30th Street, a full-page signature ad in the Daily Press and a community prayer service at St. Anne Church in Escanaba on Wednesday, Jan. 23. Watch the U.P. Action News Dec. 31 and Jan. 7 for coupon ads to sign up for the signature ad.

ESCANABA — Beth Cox will explain the process of glass beading through demonstrations and examples from 6:30 to 8:30 Monday, Jan. 7, at the Bonifas Fine Arts Center. There is no charge for the workshop. Call Janie Paulin at 786-3102 to reserve a place in the class.
