DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit pastor says he plans to run as a Democratic candidate for the seat in Congress held by longtime Democratic U.S. Rep. John Conyers.
The Rev. Horace Sheffield III told the Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/1mcUcNU ) on Wednesday that he's gathering signatures and fundraising commitments toward taking on Conyers in the 13th Congressional District. The 84-year-old Conyers hasn't yet filed for re-election.
The 59-year-old Sheffield is the pastor of New Destiny Christian Fellowship Church and the father of Detroit City Council member Mary Sheffield.
Earlier this month, Sheffield was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence involving his estranged wife. The charges stem from a Jan. 10 incident between Sheffield and DiAnna Solomon at their Detroit home. Both have said that they are in the midst of a divorce.
