Candidate(s) for public office?

Should we, the people really bother?

Little known to the general public,

but which has not got un-noticed,

is the ‘chance-happening’ that “then current” board members at our local community college would ‘resign’ their elected position before their term had expired.

Since just after the first board of trustees was seated, and their re-election was to take place, far more board members found it ‘expedient’ to resign their seat;

thus the current ‘board’ had the 'option' thrown open to them, for ‘hand-picking’ their preference to fill the portion of the unexpired, remaining seat of the newly ‘resigned’ board member.

Close examination reveals that the ‘appointment’ to fill the vacant board member seat, most often resulted in the 'handpicked' member becoming elected over any other 'candidate' not currently a board member.

While, many would say “so what”?

Inspection reveals that most true ‘candidates’

fail to win election over the ‘appointment’ made by the then current board members.

So what ?

With the exception of the first few years of the history of the local college,

board members have come to constitute a neat, closely ‘packed’ inbred/ingrown body of people, not necessarily composed of 'outsiders' who often sought election and found it more than just a little difficult to become elected to those board of trustees seats,

over the ‘hand-picked’ ‘candidate’ that was summoned to fill the unexpired portion of the term of a ‘retiring’ board member.

A nice little cabal of insider resistance to preservation of the status-quo.

For those who doubt this situation, request that the president supply a summary of board members, whether elected or elected after being appointed; a ‘fact’ sheet was distributed which bears out the truth of this historical happening.
