Jason Hanson was truly a rare breed

April 5, 2013

Brian Urlacher left the Chicago Bears. Peyton Manning was cut loose by the Indianapolis Colts. Even Brett Favre moved on from Green Bay. Not Jason Hanson....

I dislike "those" Packer fans, the ones who don't know anything about football and are just "rah rah", as much as anyone. If they do something wrong I am the first to call the team out.

"Most of their good players are gone now" - who? They lost their 3rd most productive receiver (Jennings), their 5th most productive receiver (Driver), their backup center (Saturday), a RB that only played a few games (Benson), an aging safety (Woodson), and their second (or third) string tight end (Crabtree). Losing Jennings and Woodson stinks, but that's a far cry from being "most" of Green Bay's good players.

Back to the main point, there is no way you can argue that the worst team in the NFC is a playoff contender. I'm not bashing the Lions one bit, but if they are contenders, then so are the Eagles and Raiders.

There's no doubt that Jason Hanson was great. I'm a lifelong Packer fan and there's just no denying it. He was more than consistent year after year after year, when most kickers only have a few good years in them.

To say that the Lions are a contender after having (tied for) the third-worst record in the league is ridiculous. What next? The Pistons are a contender for next season?

The Lions are a contender now? You are aware that they were 4-12 last year (tied for the worst record in the NFC), right?
