Gay marriage: The sky isn’t falling

April 4, 2013

FLINT — I don’t understand those who get so upset about gay marriage. You’d think the sky was going to fall. “This is the beginning of the end for society as we know it,” they moan....

There is some research that backs you up on this. A professor at the University of Rochester did 4 different studies which all found a correlation between homophobia and repressed homosexual desires.

It makes logical sense too. If you grow up in a church that teaches that being gay is evil and have that drummed into your head since you were a child, the realization that you're gay can lead to lots of self hatred which can outwardly manifest as homophobia.

The people who most against an act are usually the ones who have the strongest urges to engage in said act.

scott1 & BravesRock,

The Bible has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Marriage, as far as the law is concerned, is a legal contract between people. Extending access to this contract to all couples does nothing to impact your religious marriage to your spouse, nor the religious marriages of any other people.

Bringing religious marriage into the discussion simply conflates two unrelated issues. Nobody is suggesting that churches be forced to perform religious ceremonies for same sex couples. The Constitution prevents that.

We are all sinners, and Andy shows in his treatment of others, and as many show the Catholic Church. In the eyes of God, sin is sin. He hates sin. But if we take the way He offered us to get out, we'll "get out" alive. That is so much important that this (below average for Heller) article or never- ending fight about gays. I usually don't bother to share an opinion (who cares) but since we are all in the same boat, we'd be better off just hoping the right people have our back. I don't like it when people attack my church with false information, then claim the church has a narrow world view. So I don't worry about who loves who. I worry about who doesn't love who. Who hates the church? Who hates babies that magically appear in bellies? Who hates being respectful to everyone, but expects everyone to be respectful? The list goes on.

BravesRock and Scott1, even if you believe the bible is against gay marriage, our laws cannot be based off the bible as it would favor one religion and be unconstitutional. By the way, Jesus said nothing about gay marriage.

The Bible clearly states that sexual relations between members of the same sex is a sin. Christians are called to hate the sin but love the sinner, which is where those who engage in name-calling and so on fall short of what Jesus taught. But when people try to make same-sex marriage the law of the land, don't they see that they are imposing their morality on Christians, the very thing many of them accuse Christians of doing to them?

Amazing how christians are mischaracterized because they disagree with the unnatural act of same sex marriage. Disagreement does not equate to hate it is just disagreement based upon moral principles. Your use of the work "Bible Thumper" is a hateful term directed at folks who simply believe in the bibles teachings. What credentials do you have to name call Christians? Have you proven the bible wrong as written? Why does it anger you so?

Andy feller,

How dare you use me as an example as community union.

I’m a product of those ‘google-eye’ unions, you speak so highly of…

I’ve got a pouch, and a fruit tree where something else should be.

Where will I reproduce with such a mixed bag of hoppies and fruits?

Shame on you Andy!

Ya Andy. Churches should be taxed, especially the ones like the Catholic Church and the wacko born againers who decree from the pulpit how you must vote, that law must only follow their narrow view of the world and that anyone who disagrees with them must stuck down. Plus make churches file as lobbying groups.
