The future of gun legislation

January 24, 2013

FLINT — This is an appeal to the plinkers and plunkers out there — in other words the law-abiding folks who own the vast majority of assault-style weapons in this country and use them for nothing......

First off, I thought you were smarter than to use the old "it's for the kids" statement for an excuse to promote not-well-thought, knee-jerk reactions to horrible tragedies. Any ban or limits proposed would not have save any childrens' lives before and will not save any after. It is a start to infringe on our constitutional rights. We can't even keep up with those breaking the current laws. Why add more? So the politicians can project a warm and fuzzy fealing that all children are safe? With that kind of logic, you should also be pushing for no passenger vehicles to go over 45 MPH, because it'll save childrens's lives. Nobody is demanding it because it is not the answer.

Why pass a law if someone is just going to break it?

"Without you, gun legislation has no real chance of passing Congress." Well, I certainly hope so! The only thing my Congressman and Senators will be hearing from this law-abiding gun owner will be a request to please vote NO on any new gun legislation. Why? because the only ones affected are people like me, law-abiding gun owners. The people who use guns to commit crimes are CRIMINALS, which by definifion means they have no regard for laws. I doubt that any criminal is going to be deterred by the fact that they can't buy a certain gun. They don't usually buy them, other than from another thug on the street -- they usually steal them. So all these proposed new laws do is punish those of us who already obey the law, and further infringe on our rights.

Spartytruth: It's, "why pass new, stricter law(s) as a reaction to incidents where the offender(s) did not follow the current laws?". People that commit murder (with or witout guns) are going to do it no matter how many bans, restrictions and laws there are. Murder is already against the law.

I have yet to hear why someone needs an assault style weapon... Yea, a crazy could kill with a knife or handgun, but probably more lives would be spared if there was an assault weapon ban.

Yoopdedoo: the 2nd amendment was put in place for a reason, to protect us from tyranny. It clearly reads that the people should have equal or greater firepower than the government. When the people fear there government there is tyranny, when the government fears its people there is liberty.. They already made it near impossible to own fully autos, now there trying to take away our right to own semi auto rifles and pistols.. We need more responsible people to start picking up and arming themselves, the best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a bigger gun. If WE THE PEOPLE keep letting them stomp on our rights one day our kids will grow up in a world with no rights.. Keep thinking its a joke until the government kicks your door in and calls YOU a criminal or a threat for owning firearms. Thats whats coming next if they keep getting there way.

yoopdedoo, Pistols, not "assult rifles" are responsible for almost all murders. It is not even close to effective to institute a ban on anything. There are already millions of these guns out in the publics hands, and they cant take them (yet).

Mr. Heller was incorrect about the weaponry used by the mentally unstable Adam Lanza. It turns out he did not use an AR-15, he used 2 pistols. You wont hear that in the main stream media though.

I am noticing a disturbing trend in Journalism today. Most outlets and writers (Like Mr. Heller) have become the mouthpiece for Liberal, political agenda.

It is almost like they are writing and reporting like the Old Communist Russian State News. I know there is no government censorship, but there is a self imposed censorship. The News Media (most of them anyway) are in line with the powers that be and they are feeding the illogical frenzy to those who have been programmed to listen.

Look at any national Liberal news outlet. They are reporting every gun incident in the US right now. Why? Because Liberal politicians are trying to limit gun ownership right now. It is the same for every political move. Politicians attempt something and the Media saturates Liberal outlets with supporting stories. Anyone else noticing this?

Anyway, I can guarantee this. If the Government told the Media what was acceptable to reoprt, the Media would scream about their 1st amendment rights. The Media is disregarding its 1st amendment responsibilities. The 1st amendment is about the media telling us all the truth, because they can without threat from government. They chose to go against it of their own free will and some people get in line to listen.

The folks that founded this country would be absolutely livid if they were brought back today to see the disregard some people show for freedom and the rules they applied to maintain it.

The Media should be ashamed of themselves for trying to help tear down the constitution. A document that ultimately protects them. Welcome to the U.S.S.A.
