School put in lockdown twice

Escanaba Public Safety officers responded to a bomb threat at the Escanaba Middle School Thursday. Charges are being sought against the youth who allegedly made the threat.

ESCANABA — Classes continued throughout much of the day Thursday at the Escanaba Middle School, even as school officials instituted two separate lock-downs of the facility. The first occurred at approximately 7:55 a.m. when a student was observed hiding what appeared to be a weapon on school property. Escanaba Public Safety Det. Sgt. Tony LaPlant was notified. An investigation lead to the recovery of a BB gun. Charges against the student for minor in possession of a BB gun are being sought through the Delta County Prosecutor’s Office. A separate incident Thursday occurred at approximately 12:05 p.m. when a bomb threat was found written on a restroom wall. The building and students were once again placed into a lock-down for approximately 50 minutes. Escanaba Public Safety conducted a sweep of the building. No explosive devices were found. Charges of false report of a bomb or other harmful device are being sought against the student who allegedly wrote the message.
