Esky grid playoff run ends
WEST BRANCH — The Escanaba Eskymos scored the opening touchdown but everything went downhill from there Saturday. West Branch Ogemaw Heights overwhelmed the Eskymos 44-20 in the Division 3 district football championship game. John Hughes had four touchdowns and 201 of the Falcons’ 373 yards. Sophomore quarterback Austin Young had two late touchdown runs for the Eskymos, who trailed 44-6 at one point. Mitch VanEffen caught a 72-yard TD pass from Max VandeWiele for the first score for Esky, which finishes 8-3. GARDEN CORNERS — The Big Bay de Noc volleyball season came to a crushing end here Thursday Night as the Rapid River Rockets rallied for a 3-2 victory (23-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-13, 15-13) in a district semifinal matchup.
