Bruntjens, Ferris in D-2 finals
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — Ferris State University is going to the NCAA Division 2 softball finals, and Holly Bruntjens of Gladstone is a big reason.
Ferris won the Great Lakes Regional Saturday, beating Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 1-0 in the championship game after stopping Wayne State University 4-0 in the semifinals.
Bruntjens, a junior pitcher, allowed four hits in each game and was named the tournament’s outstanding player. She was joined on the all-tourney team by teammate Sarah Mueller.
Bruntjens (15-8) struck out six and walked three in the title game after striking out three in the semifinals. She was 3-0 in the tourney.
The Bulldogs (34-16) will face South Atlantic champion Francis Marion, S.C. at noon (CDT) Wednesday in Houston at the 27th NCAA Division 2 tournament.
Lewis University’s season ended Friday night with a 10-7 loss to Indianapolis.
Blast opens with a win
POWERS — Craig Bilski opened the game with a 91-yard kick return and the U.P. Arctic Blast went on to beat the Appleton Storm 21-14 in the football season opener here Saturday at North Central High School.

PETOSKEY — It took eight innings, but the Escanaba Eskymos managed to gain a split in two baseball games at Saturday’s Petoskey Invitational.
Esjy squeezed past Cedar Springs 6-5 after falling 3-1 to Port Huron.
Gladstone wins Petoskey title
PETOSKEY — The Escanaba and Gladstone softball teams went 2-for-3 in Saturday’s Petoskey Invitational.
The difference, however, is Gladstone was crowned champion after slipping past Reese 2-1 in eight innings.

MUNISING — After settling for runner-up honors a year ago, there was plenty of motivation for the Gladstone boys in Saturday’s Munising Invitational Track Meet.

The Redettes scored 133 points, while second-place Kingsford finished the meet with 101.
