Honoring our heroes

May 22, 2014 - Jason Raiche
ESCANABA — With Memorial Day weekend just around the corner and the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight’s recent completion of its sixth mission, I can’t help but feel grateful to organizers who have worked tirelessly to continue this program in Delta County. The U.P. Honor Flight, which transports veterans to Washington, D.C. to give them the chance to visit and reflect at the memorials erected in their honor, is outstanding and it’s great to hear the program continue to succeed and be well supported. Just this past week, I found out the most recent Honor Flight on May 14 had the largest crowd waiting at the Delta County Airport of all six missions, with family members and the community coming out in full force to greet our nation’s heroes as they returned home. It’s awesome to see so many people come out to support such a wonderful cause. This Memorial Day I hope everyone takes the time out of what many view as a weekend that marks the “official kick-off to summer” and remember those who have fought and died for their country, for the freedoms that we have all been able to enjoy.
