Do you know why you are protesting?

EDITOR:

When I was just a young pre-teen growing up in the Midwest, I used to watch the nightly news and one of my memories from that time is all of the protests. The Watts riots, the Detroit Cass Corridor riots, the Democratic National Convention riots. All of these came from protests. People were upset at the race situation and they protested. Later, there were protests about the Vietnam War. Fast forward 40 and 50 years. Last year we had riots because Donald Trump was elected President. We’ve had riots because a few didn’t like the fact that Milo was going to speak at Berkeley. In the 60s, Berkeley was the epicenter of free speech. In the 60s everyone knew why they were protesting. Take the so-called “women’s march” the Saturday after President Trump was inaugurated. How many of them knew why they were there? The NFL players started taking a knee during the National Anthem. When you asked them why, you got many different responses.

Today, March 14. Pi day. How many of those students walking out of school know what Pi is? We have hundreds of school kids walking out of school “protesting” the fact that 17 were killed in a school a month ago. How many knew what they were actually protesting? I have heard many different responses from students. Some of the students were reading from a script. Do the students really want to get rid of the guns? “Somebody should do something.” Yes, the sheriff’s department failed to do its job. What do the students want “somebody to do”? It is already illegal to murder. It was illegal to have the guns on school property. If the sheriff had done the right thing, this tragedy could have been avoided.

This “protest” was manufactured by a few that want to take your guns away, and take your Constitutional rights away. A terrible tragedy happened in Florida. A terrible tragedy happens every weekend in Chicago and Baltimore. Every day, students are killed because of texting. How about drunk driving? Where is the outrage at those situations? I don’t see a bunch of students parading to Washington to ban cell phones. “We have to do something!” What do you suggest?
